The First Word Revealed

The very first word revealed to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was اقْرَأْ — Iqra — Read.

اقْرَأْ بِسْمِ رَبِّكَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ ﴿١﴾ خَلَقَ الْإِنسَانَ مِنْ عَلَقٍ ﴿٢﴾ اقْرَأْ وَرَبُّكَ الْأَكْرَمُ ﴿٣﴾ الَّذِي عَلَّمَ بِالْقَلَمِ ﴿٤﴾ عَلَّمَ الْإِنسَانَ مَا لَمْ يَعْلَمْ ﴿٥﴾
Read in the name of your Lord who created — (1)
Created man from a clinging substance. (2)
Read, and your Lord is the most Generous — (3)
Who taught by the pen — (4)
Taught man that which he knew not. (5)

— Surah Al-Alaq (96:1–5)

The very first commandment in the Quran is to read, learn, and seek knowledge.

What Is This Website?
